"A versatile barbecue sauce - sweet and spicy. Kind of like magic -- anything I prepare with this sauce disappears! It's a hit with all ages. I've started preparing it with Xylitol, also known as birch sugar, instead of sugar, and it works just great, plus it's easier on blood sugar levels."

ingredients

  • 12 cup Heinz ketchup
  • 18 cup water (more or less for desired thickness)
  • 1 garlic clove, minced (or more ( I mean, why not?)
  • 12 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon chili powder
  • 14 cup sugar or 1/4 cup honey
  • 1 teaspoon prepared yellow mustard

directions

  • Combine ingredients, bring to a boil and simmer over low heat for 5 minutes.
  • Use this as a basting sauce for barbecue, or combine with chopped or shredded beef, chicken or pork, and simmer until heated throughout and flavor is well through the meat.
  • If you want to make up a batch of this to keep in the freezer, leave out the water, and it will not freeze solid. You can take out the container and just scoop out however much you need. I sometimes make it up by the gallon just to have it on hand for easy meals.

  1. I didn't have any bottled barbecue sauce so I decided to try this recipe. I'm very happy to find a recipe that uses common ingredients that you can easily find in your pantry. This sauce was so easy to make and tasted better than store bought sauce. What a great idea to make a big batch and freeze it. I didn't have any fresh garlic so I substituted 1/8 tsp of garlic powder and it still turned out great. Used the honey and I didn't have to add much water. Thanks for such an easy, tasty recipe.

  2. Added hickory smoke liquid, used maple syrup instead of honey or sugar, used dijon mustard. Tasted excellent! Will not buy store brands anymore. Thanks!

  3. This BBQ sauce is yummy. ThatBobbieGirl made some for me. I thought she spent hours making it. Apparently it's much easier than I thought!

  4. I love this barbecue sauce. It's tangy, and is versatile when I would like for it to have a kick or mild when I am using it for a group to entertain. I mainly use it for my barbecue chicken flat bread, and it is always a hit. I never have to worry about not having barbecue sauce or having to buy it pre-made, because I usually always have the ingredients on hand.

  3. I used this sauce on some ribs I was preparing on the grill. It was really good! I used honey instead of sugar to make it a little healthier for us. I try to cut corners where ever I can!

  4. I mixed up this sauce (did not boil or cook it first) and put it on top of pork steaks that I had in the crock pot (last couple hours of cooking). didn't use any extra water because of the pork juices. made it with sugar instead of honey as I had small children at dinner. turned out great. the sauce is better than my favorite (but costly) bottled bbq sauce and it's a lot cheaper to make. will be trying this on other meats as well. thanks!

  5. Fabulous!! YUM! I had some pork spare ribs grilled from yesterday with using Recipe#97563 and I wanted to put a BBQ sauce over the ones that I had left today so I found this recipe. I was very low on my store brand Ketchup so I decided to search for a ketchup recipe and found Recipe#230807. All I can say is our ribs were the best today than they were yesterday. I can't wait to try chicken with this BBQ sauce. I used the honey in place of sugar and I omitted the water since I made the homemade ketchup. Worked out GREAT!Thanks for sharing the recipe! One that I know I will keep forever. :)
