Turrican II: The Final Fight (2024)

A tougher task than the first Turrican but an amazing job by the programmers given the hardware. Another stellar achievement but I just wish it wasn't quite so punishing compared to the original.

Everything about this game just oozes quality, showmanship, class and finesse. A technical masterpiece for the C64 in every sense of the word. Gigantic levels, incredible music, stunning visuals and MASSIVE end of level bosses which will blow your mind - this game had it all, and really showcased what the humble C64 could do when the right developers were involved.
I managed to complete this game as a kid which was an enormous challenge but I kept coming back for more just to experience it all again and again and again. Quite simply, a superb C64 title.

What can be said that hasn't been said about a game that genuinely surpasses what can reasonably be expected on the hardware. Superb immersive environments and full on action including even SEU stages. Very playable but with all the power ups and weapons available the game is too damn easy.

Technically even more impressive than the first one, and also the graphics were even better. Everything was pushed to the maximum, with incredible end of level bosses and a lot of inventive stuff. The space ship sections were a nice touch and very well done, with the crazy scrolling and all. Maybe the first one had a better atmosphere and more intriguing settings, still this one is a work of art and the ending sequence was jaw-dropping.

A strong contender for technically the best game to appear on the platform. It squeezes every last drop from the C64. Its not just the amazing graphics, sound, music, level design, intro and ending that make it special though. Its also one of the most playable games on the C64.
I personally found it as hard as nails (despite some others here obviously being more adept than me at this style of game saying it was on the easy side) but it definitely has that I must keep going to see the end and it is a fantastic ending, feel to it.
Definitely in my all time top 10 on the C64. An absolute masterpiece by Trenz and Escher. Just about as perfect as you could hope for given the limitations of the C64.

One of the best games for the C64 ever. I own it on both tape and disk and must have completed the game at least 15 times(would take me a lot of time to repeat that now).

Disk version is good because it has the high-score saver. I fired up my C64 after a break of 15 years and just watching the intro brought back so many memories of playing this great game.

My first Turrican game was Mega Turrican on the MD. I feel a little spoilt by it because the versions on C64 and Amiga have worse controls, mainly due to Joystick + only one fire button.

Also the enemies often feel like more of a memory test than actual skill.

Put just a little time into either Turrican game and you'll complete them. Usually that's the kiss of death for a game, but Turrican 2 practically begs you to start over again, if only to see those giant bosses and re-experience the 3 shoot em up stages in the middle of the game.

This still makes the cut almost 25 years later.

I still play this game from time to time, and the technical wizardry is still very impressive.
Huge levels, great (and fast!) shmup sections and improvements on the original gameplay and structure create a timeless classic for the C64.
Difficult, but that's what you want as it creates longevity in the game...

Superb and a bona fide classic!

Stunning graphics and a soundtrack I still whistle today. Love it. Got my house mate playing this last summer after he came in and saw me playing it on my old commodore. I could not believe the graphics in this game. Is this the C64? Imagine starting out creating games with simple graphics, which is expected of the C64, and pushing the bar (and limitations) of the C64 for a game like Turrican. I say this, and I mean it 100%. I don't know why there were not more programmers/graphic artists of the caliber used for creating this game, but I can say confidently that if more games like this were created for the C64 early on, it would still be around today. Popular 16-bit consoles (you know who they are) have nothing on this game.

Turrican II is sheer amazement.

It's not a port, it's the original version.

Also, it's (in my opinion) the best C64 game ever made. You'd think that it would take a 16-bit console to handle the huge levels and multitude of sprites, but the C64 does it all on its own! And it's really fun to play, too, unlike some technically advanced games that had good graphics and not much else.

Turrican 2. The final fight:

+ "over the limit de luxe" graphics.
+ superb music and sfx.
+ huge and long.
+ a breathtaking mixture of technical magnificence, programming artwork and frantic action.

- slight graphical bugs.
- could be a bit more difficult (it's a bit too generous with extra lives)

I honestly believe this is the peak of the Commodore 64: there can't be a better game than Turrican 2 on that platform! Trenz & Escher finally got it all together in this game; great graphics, fantastic levels (both huge and varied), relentless action and some of the most impressive end-bosses ever. Vip 2003-11-28

As with its predecessor, technically stunning, and the game at the time was one of the best out there. I preferred the Amiga version, though, as it had Chris Huelsbeck's fabulous soundtrack throughout the game. But Manfred Trenz still managed to be incredibly to the Amiga version, only forced to leave out the music because of memory problems. Again, people claiming that this game has no substance or unimpressive graphics, have no ideas about what a C64 actually IS and what its limitations are. My only complaint would be that it is slightly on the easy side, but that's really it. A tremendous experience, and my thumbs are right where they should be... UP!

The best C64 game forever...

Little Andy 2003-05-21

Absolutely amazing. One of the very best C64 games.

Mike 2003-04-04

Arguably one of the best C64 games, if not one of the best games of all time.

Turrican 2 takes the games player to a whole new level of enjoyment from its predecessor (a mangnificent game in its own right). Every fault in the first installment has been addressed and every aspect of the game tweaked to perfection.

The Commodore version is a fantastic achievement with brilliantly drawn backgrounds and highly detailed sprites. The 8-way scrolling has to be seen to be believed and is only bettered by the Amiga version.

There is no other 8-bit game that offers the unique hybrid of exploration and shoot 'em up action. If you haven't played this game, you don't deserve a C64!

Paul D 2003-02-03

What a fantasic shoot - em - up. I never played a game to death as much as Turrican. Completed it atleast a dozen times and never tired of going back trying to find new stuff. Manfred Trenz was the man. It had everything. From Commodore to Sega megadrive to playstation to PC nothing has hit the nail like this classic.

Skippy 2003-01-17

In many ways this was the ultimate platform shoot 'em-up. Visually and sonically, it was unmatched - I can still recall every single tune in the game with ease (especially the astounding title track). The core platforming sections are as playable as they are massive, augmented by a side-scrolling section that knocks R-Type, X-Out and even Denaris into a co*cked hat. Let down only by its easiness, this is a must-play for any action fan.

Xara 2002-12-16

Is it possible to surpass the original masterpiece? Oh yes. Only a stroke of genius can produce a game of this calibre. This game is a C64 legend. No game has even come close to giving me this much excitement in terms of graphic splender, sonic delights and towering gameplay. A remarkable achievement in every respect. A work of 8-bit art.

kenny45000 2002-06-26

Great Great and Great game that ever made ond this computer.

Mar 2002-06-22

One of the best games on the C64 for sure. The music and graphics were amazing, and the gameplay was awesome. If you havn't played this, then it's almost the same as Metroid. I can never decide which game is better though... They both do this style so well. Absolutely tonnes of secrets to find... Turrican 2 was a bit more diverse though I would say. With the side scrolling shoot em up section that just blew my mind. Racing through tight areas at a billion kilometres an hour. Then facing that boss with twin gattling guns. The music is so perfect for that bit, the sounds of the guns even seem to blend with the music and create some kind of drum beat... Don't be put off by the crappy Turrican games on the Megadrive and SNES. The original Turricans (one and two) are great games and don't just rely on the shooter element. Play this game if you havn't already!!

Pero 2002-06-14

This game is one of the best C64 games ever made!

Rob 2002-04-24

This should be rated 9. 9. Terrific detailed graphics, smooth animation and great gameplay and you never knew what was coming next. Streets ahead of the Amiga version. Play it-You won't be dissapointed.

Roberto 2002-04-20

6. 9 is too low. Turrican 2 is the BEST game ever. Vote... Vote... Vote... 10!

Toggle 2002-02-11

One of the best games ever. Technically brilliant with great grafics. Unfortunately the musics aren't that good (I'm not saying they are bad though!).

Roy 2002-02-03

?? Why is this game rated so low by all you people?? A leap ahead of the original, although in my opinion the music is worse... It gets my vote as the best C64 game ever. It really pushed the C64 to its limits. Best 8-bit game ever?

Paul 2002-02-01

What can I say more?
This is definitely one of the C64 finest games
ever. The music and sound effects are top
quality, the graphics superb, but what sets
it in its own class is its playability.
This is really a good game to play,
with lots of surprises.
Every part of the game breathes quality,
every detail is very well done.
Now and then I run the game just for
the title screen which has awesome music
and pleasing visual effects.
Somehow the music doesn't sound good
on an emulator, even on my original
64 I have to clean boot this game to
get the best sound, but the title
music is worth it.

The in-game music is a work of art,
for it often uses only 2 voices with a third
reserved for sound effects. I'm still amased
how they could get that music from only 2

Craig Grannell 2002-01-27

Far, far too easy, but still one of the best C64 games ever, due to its playability, excellent graphics and pumping soundtrack on the shoot-'em-up stages. I actually still prefer this to the 'sequels' on Amiga and SNES...

Paul Brooks 2002-01-16

I agree with alex that this game, along with the Turrican are without doubt the best games on the C64, and may I be bold as to say their is only a couple of rivals on any platform, including the PC. It astounded me with it's graphics, explosions, exploration, hidden secrets and the weapons where awesome. I don't finish a game unless it has something special to offer and the turricans games, (not the 3rd installment on the amiga) are the benchmarks game wise that programmers even now should aiming to better.

Alex Aslanidis 2001-12-31

This, according to my opinion, is the best ever C64 game. It combines massive playability, with technical perfection. The graphics are AWESOME and the levels are huge. Platform shoot-em-ups were never this good. With 5 different worlds to conquer, amazing parallax scrolling, ultra-big baddies, underwater sections, a blindingly fast left-to-right shoot-em-up section, and many many other features, this is as good as it gets...
